What Texas Adult Drivers Ed Covers
TDLR #C2636 is a six-hour online course for adults 18 and older. First-time applicants who are 18 or older and younger than 25 must complete it unless they already hold a valid license from another state. The course is 100% online on a phone, tablet, or laptop.
Two things happen when you finish. You complete TDLR adult driver education. Then the final exam in the course is the DPS written knowledge test. Pass it, print your ADE-1317 from your account, and take the certificate to your local DPS. DPS accepts a current ADE-1317 in place of the standalone written test at the office. You still do vision screening, the road test, and ITAD separately.
Modules use text, audio, graphics, and video. Each one ends with a review so the written exam is not a cold start.
Who Needs Texas Adult Drivers Ed?
Required for ages 18–24
If you are 18–24, have never finished a TDLR-approved driver education course, and do not hold a valid driver’s license from another state, DPS will not issue a license until you complete a TDLR adult course and present ADE-1317. That rule is Texas Transportation Code §521.1601. Knowing how to drive does not replace the certificate.
This is an adult course: six classroom hours, no TDLR behind-the-wheel hours attached to the course. Skip the course if you hold a valid out-of-state license.
Optional for Adult Drivers ages 25+
At 25 or older, Texas does not require adult driver education. Many adults still take the six hours so they can pass the DPS written test here and walk into DPS with ADE-1317 certificate instead of taking the written test at the DPS office. That includes people who never applied for a license, let an old permit lapse, or need Texas-specific rules before the road test.
Skip this course if you hold a valid out-of-state license
§521.1601 does not apply if you hold a valid driver’s license issued by another state. Transfer that license at DPS. An expired out-of-state license is not the same thing.

- At DPS, bring ADE-1317, ITAD, and the identity / residency documents DPS lists. Complete vision screening. Then either take the skills (road) test or leave with a restricted license (learner’s permit) so you can practice first.
90.4% of students in this course pass the online written test on the first try. If you do not, you get up to three attempts and can reopen the modules and practice items before you test again.
Use your ADE-1317 certificate while it is still current. DPS treats the certificate as a written-test substitute when it is presented within the department’s acceptance window (generally two years from the certificate date).
Pass the DPS Written Test in Adult Drivers Ed Course
The last exam in the six hour adult course is the official DPS written knowledge test — signs, signals, and Texas traffic law. Pass it here and your ADE-1317 certificate shows the DPS office two things: you finished TDLR adult driver education, and you already passed the written exam. You will not have to retake the DPS written exam once you have your ADE-1317 certificate
The ADE-1317 certificate does not replace vision screening, the road test, or ITAD. It replaces the standalone DPS written test.
